Botox & Dysport
Neuromodulators, Botox and Dysport, are wrinkle-relaxing injections of botulinum toxin – that are used to treat facial wrinkles, frown lines and crow’s feet. A minute amount of the neuromodulator is injected directly into the underlying muscle, causing it to relax and gradually smooth out the appearance of the overlying skin.
In general, treatment lasts 3-4 months. There will certainly be patients whose treatment lasts longer, in that 4-6 month range, or shorter, in that 2-month range. It is also common for first-timers to notice that it may not last as long initially but may last longer after the second treatment.
During your treatment, the needle may puncture a small blood vessel. This may cause a small bruise that can last 5-10 days. Discontinue aspirin, ibuprofen, and other blood thinners three weeks prior to your treatment.
If any of the botulinum toxins reach a facial muscle not treated, partial weakness of that muscle may last for several days to weeks. For this reason, the injected area should not be massaged for 12 hours following treatment. If an untreated area experiences muscle weakness, the only “treatment” is to wait for the effect of the toxin to wear off.
There are no recognized permanent side effects of neuromodulators. Complications are rare but may include paralysis of a nearby muscle, resulting in its temporary loss of function (e.g., a drooping eyelid). Neuromodulators have been used safely in the treatment of muscular facial spasms for many years.
Botox and Dysport Cosmetic Pre and Post Care Instructions
1. It is helpful to avoid blood thinning over-the-counter medications such as Aspirin, Motrin, and Aleve. Tylenol is OK to use. Please notify your practitioner if you are using prescription or non-prescription blood thinners so extra precaution can be taken to avoid bruising. If bruising occurs, it is most common around the eyes and can typically be covered using makeup. While we make every effort to avoid bruising, this may occur because the skin around the eyes is very thin and there are several small vessels in this area. Bruising is usually minimal and may take several days to resolve completely.
2. If this is your first time receiving a Botox and/or Dysport treatment at our office, a "Before" photo may be taken. Your treatment will take effect in anywhere from 2 days to 2 weeks, but most commonly within 3-5 days. Since everybody is different, your Botox and/or Dysport Cosmetic treatment is tailored specifically for you, therefore we would like to see you back in 2 weeks for a quick check of your treatment outcome. Any refinements to your dose will be done at that time at $11 per unit.
3. I would like to see you return in 2 weeks to make sure both you and I are satisfied with the results! At that time we may also take your “After” photo for your patient file. This photo will not be shared without your expressed written permission.
4. Immediately following your treatment, please do not lie down for 4-6 hours.
5. Avoid any massage or pressure to the area, as this may disrupt the placement of the drug. If you would like to re-apply makeup, please do so gently over the treated area.
6. Refrain from heavy exercise for 24 hours.
7. Allergan, the manufacturer of Botox, as well as our own patient experiences, report the average duration of results is approximately 3-4 months. It is important to maintain regular injection intervals to maintain an optimal aesthetic result and prevent returning to your original pre-treatment condition.
8. Let me know if you have any comments, questions or concerns.
